Project Engineering at OneStep Power Solutions
|
OneStep Power Solutions is a power systems testing firm whose mission is to provide robust, reliable, and repeatable power system testing and solutions. In my role as a project engineer I provide project management support to our clients seeking vessel assurance and acceptance. I support clients by coordinating stakeholders' communications and test programs, evaluating contract and system requirements, and advising on validation and evidentiary methods available. I utilize management software to track deliverables and action items for the clients, and communicate these with all stakeholders.
Since starting I have learned more about electrical engineering principles, dynamic positioning systems, and the marine and energy industries. |
Production Engineering in the Bakken During the summer of 2018 I was assigned as a production engineering intern out of Watford City, North Dakota. I was tasked with investigating a long term project which affected surface equipment of wells.
The Bakken region, which includes North Dakota and parts of Montana; South Dakota; and Saskatchewan, is the second largest producing area of crude oil in the U.S. The advancement in oil recovery methods led to the exponential increase in the development of the region since the mid 2000s. The first step in a project is to become familiar with the problem. The best way to do this was to go on maintenance calls with service hands and observe how each piece of equipment carries production through to its next phase. I was able to build rapport with the people who had experience dealing with wells in the region by asking questions and spending time learning their routines. Once I was able to visualize the basic processes of land production I could now identify irregularities. Under the guidance of a mentor, I performed root cause analysis based on extensive well log documentation, to create trend reports and look for patterns. I also spoke with other engineers, service partners, and well hands to discuss their encounters with similar issues they had seen in the past and how they were resolved. The final piece was to produce solutions and a recommendation for a course of action. Based on the root cause analysis and speaking with experienced people, I was able to offer a few types of solutions. I then outlined these in a formal presentation and presented it to a panel at the conclusion of the internship with my recommendations. Ultimately this experience proved to me that engineering is not an individual endeavour. It is important to include other experienced people especially when in a new environment. Only after a systematic consideration of all solutions can a reasonable solution be implemented. |
